Welcome to another inspiring feature in our Women in Business Rock series. Strangely, and by sheer coincidence todays conversation is with Desiree who goes by the name ‘Women in Business Rock’ on Instagram. Desiree is a highly intelligent trailblazer of a woman, she is more than a ‘girlboss’ she is the true definition of a power house business woman. A marketing and financial services expert, Desiree provides us with a wealth of knowledge about being a successful entrepreneur.
Pink Intrigue: Firstly, I would like to say thank you for taking the time to have a chat with us. Can you please introduce yourself to our fabulous readers?
Desiree: Firstly, thank you Pink Intrigue for featuring me in your one-of-kind Women in Business Rock series. I am honoured! I possess 8 years of experience in business and financial services specializing in marketing, business development, and operations. I have had my own marketing start-up for 4 years. I serve the women’s community via the board of the National Association of Professional Women and Women in Insurance and Financial Services. I also support leading diversity organizations like the National Black MBA, ALPFA, and the Manavi South Asian organization. I also work for JP Morgan Chase in their wealth management division and I’m proud to serve on their Culture Council. I love to cook, sing, dance and most importantly, make people smile. A smile can add a little joy to anyone’s day.
Pink Intrigue: When did you start your business, and what was your ultimate motivation to do so?
Desiree: I began my marketing start up in 2014 to assist emerging small business owners with marketing strategy and personal brand development. I entitled it Billion Dollar Small Business because I want business owners to think BIG and believe anything is possible with the right grit, determination, hunger, and support system.
Pink Intrigue: If you could describe your business in a few words , what would they be?
Desiree: Business matchmaking. It has evolved from hands-on marketing services to more people-to-people connections, partnerships, and strategic introductions.
Pink Intrigue: What is your key mission?
Desiree: I want my clients to understand the value of a personal brand and how it can impact their present growth and future longevity.
It is crucial to realize it is not just who you know… it’s who knows you as stated by a wise individual in my network.
Pink Intrigue: What makes you tick as a businesswoman?
Desiree: Women not “blocking the wind” for other women as so eloquently put by one of my mentors. We can’t expect for things to change if we won’t lead by example.
Gandhi said “be the change we wish to see in the world.” First female president? It starts with us as women helping each other first and setting the tone for our society.
Pink Intrigue: What Challenges have you faced as an entrepreneur and how have you overcome those challenges?
Desiree: I do not see things as challenges, I see them as opportunities, the same way I do not see things as sacrifices, I see them as investments. My primary objective is to ensure I make both the corporate and entrepreneur journey as fruitful as possible! However, I’m happy to thoroughly thrive in both. I love my corporate family and I treasure my entrepreneurial world. We all have to find our happy place. As long as I am touching someone’s life through my work… I am wholeheartedly fulfilled.
And this one is very key: Learning the power of NO when deemed necessary. Being a YES woman is not a compliment, it is a concern. We want to be remembered for the value we add, not how much we take on.
Pink Intrigue: Female entrepreneurs are the fastest growing group of entrepreneurs in the USA and many other locations around the world, Why do you think this is?
Desiree: According to Inc. Magazine, women are driven to do business better and make work better.
More than 11.6 million firms are owned by women, and of that 5.4 million firms are owned by women of color. One in 5 firms with revenue of $1 M or more are women – owned.
I think Inc. Magazine has it right. It’s the relentless energy and determination to make business more efficient (for all) and to create a more flexible work environment and a better work – life balance that leads to the thriving number of women in business (for themselves).
Pink Intrigue: Do you have a daily routine that helps motivate and push you to succeed?
Desiree: I begin each day with the 5 things I’m grateful for.
I have many more things I’m grateful for, but it’s a refreshing way to start the day- no technology, no stress, no negative energy.
I am a firm believer in the power of mindset. It can make or break your day or revolutionize it.
Pink Intrigue: Favorite quote?
Desiree: I have two!
“Don’t listen to me. Listen to yourself. People often ask me, Who am I passing the torch to?
First of all, I’m not giving up my torch, thank you!
I’m using my torch to light other people’s torches.
If we each have a torch, there’s a lot more light” – Gloria Steinem
“Your smile is your logo. Your personality is your business card, and how you leave others feeling after having an experience with you, becomes your trademark” – Jay Danzie
Pink Intrigue: Favorite female boss?
Desiree: Indra Nooyi, Ceo of Pepsi
Indra is exactly what we need in a CEO- compassionate, hard-working, committed, creative, a thought leader, and most importantly… human. She said what if women can’t have it all and if the concept is unrealistic and I think this diverse viewpoint is refreshing. It aligns with the concept of being a “NO” woman when necessary. She also has humble roots and speaks of how the first time she found out she was going to be CEO of Pepsi and went to tell her mom, her mother replies “Are you going to the store to get milk?”.
Pink Intrigue: Do you have any recommended personal development books?
Desiree: She Means Business by Carrie Green
-Self Made by Nely Galan
-10K’s of Personal Branding by Kaplan Mobray
-Get All the A’s in The Game of Life: Insights Along The Way by Susan Vernicek – I’m featured in this one!
Pink Intrigue: Goals for 2018?
Desiree: To always be inspired to make more goals? Just kidding.
I think it’s important to always find new forms of self-motivation, taking a second to smell the roses, and enjoying the ride – life’s adventures can be fun!
But ultimately my goals are to:
1) Continue leaving my footprint and to inspire other women to be the best version of themselves.
2) To sponsor those that can’t currently open the doors for themselves.
3) To leave a meaningful impact in people’s lives even if it’s just simply being another person that believes in them and encourages them to challenge themselves to be greater. Sometimes it just takes ONE person.
Pink Intrigue: Do you have any advice for up and coming female entrepreneurs?
Desiree: Ask…For..Help! Seek business coaches, seek mentors, seek sponsors. There is nothing wrong with asking for help, in fact it can be vital not only to business growth but also to survival.
Pink Intrigue: If you could write a letter to your teenage self, what would it say?
Desiree: RELAX! I was non-stop and high stress and I didn’t feel anything was ever quite good enough. My parents would shut my lights out and “GO TO SLEEP!” because I would sneak and study after hours.
I think it’s key to remember it’s about the journey, just as much as it’s about the destination.
Pink Intrigue: Looking back, what would you have done differently in business?
No, I’ll be serious… I am content with everything I did. I am grateful for the lessons learned, the highs and lows, the orchestra and the band, the sing and dance, every moment shaped me into who I am today and I never stop learning and never stop making little foolish mistakes. It’s inspiring actually and keeps you fired up!
Pink Intrigue: Desiree, you inspire, help and motivate others. What do you know for sure?
Desiree: I am confident in my skin. I am happy with my mind. I am loyal to my morals. I am my mother and father’s daughter. And I believe there is a higher power keeping me spiritually grounded.
I am confident in the ability of others and so I praise them. It feels good to make others feel good as we must lift others up as we climb. I believe there are heroes and she-roes! I also feel with conviction that the battle for an all-inclusive society is still yet to be won and we cannot get comfortable.
